When do we care about Germany’s Echo Awards? When Rihanna shows up wearing a lowwwwww-cut green one-piece suitable for both super-villainy and a night at home with the Golden Girls. Though her performance of “Rude Boy” was pretty awesome—if only because she had to flirt with giant, slow-moving sci-fi robots—Rihanna’s repeated failures to match Lady Gaga in fashion forwardness was underlined by Gaga (who didn’t bother attending) picking up four trophies while Rih-Rih went home with nothing.

We sat down with Adam Lambert today (more on that swoon-tastic moment next week), and the first thing we spoke about was yesterday’s death of innovative fashion designer Alexander “Lee” McQueen. The singer showed up to our interview in a McQueen shirt in honor of the late luminary, and expressed his sadness over the designer’s alleged suicide numerous times during out chat. It’s a great loss for all of us, but for someone like Adam who gets fashion (and by “get” we mean he wore the fiercest patent leather YSL boots today, while we stomped around in Steve Maddens) it’s felt a bit deeper. In the clip above, he shares with us his grief over losing a sartorial “visionary.”
Lady Gaga’s outfits always ere on the side of the fashionably insane, but not wearing a coat in the middle of a blizzard? That’s downright cray-cray. Yet we spotted our favorite New Yorker taking her hometown by storm this morning, showing up to an appearance at “Good Morning America” in a sheer dress with nothing but a wee bit of nipple tape to keep her warm. Oh wait! Please excuse us - she was also wearing sunglasses and a military hat, some of the warmest accessories on the market.
Gaga was joined by pal Cyndi Lauper on the cheesetastic morning show (which one should only watch when stuck at home on a show day) to promote Mac Cosmetics’ Viva Glam campaign, with proceeds benefiting AIDS research. Rihanna took the stage at last night’s Pepsi Super Bowl Fan Jam in an outfit that split the difference between lingerie and shoulder-padded bodysuit, tastefully accessorized with goggles and a sword. Lady Gaga has met her rival in Sweden’s Karin Dreijer, singer from The Knife and Fever Ray. Even if you’ve never heard of Karin you’ve probably heard her music - she sings that catchy song “Heartbeats” that everyone went crazy for a few years ago. Karin went up at a recent Swedish awards show to accept her prize in a get-up that - while similar to some of Lady Gaga’s outfits, like the all-red outfit she wore at the VMAs - looked like a blood-red KKK cloak. But the real ‘oh sh*t!’ moment occurred when she pulled off her mask to reveal a face covered in dripping silly putty. Her speech consisted of a couple of moans, because, you know, her mouth was melded shut by the stuff and she couldn’t really speak.
GaGa may wear weird things, but you better believe she always looks hot while doing so. She’s the weird alternative girl you knew in high school that managed to make her indie outfits sexy enough to turn everyone on. Karin doesn’t give a crap if you want to do her - she’s more interested in scaring the hell out of you instead (which is kinda sexy, if you’re into faces that are covered with tiny, melting octupus tentacles).
To compare them to another American-Swedish face-off: Gaga is Twilight, while Karin is Let The Right One In - darker and weirder, but so much better.
If you can stomach ten minutes of Sean Combs discussing the plush, luxe softness of his $60 bathrobes on the Home Shopping Network, have we got a clip for you. Sean-P-Puff-Diddy-Daddy-Combs is now shilling his lifestyle products on the network, and you know what? He’s really good at it.
Combs broke HSN records by selling out his Sean John fragrances, travel kits and robes in 15 minutes, generating hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue. Not only did Combs succeed in selling his wares, he also doled out bits of inspiration - no purchase necessary. After discussing his work ethic and an anecdote about working in a Mexican restaurant, he told his bathrobe-buying fans, “You can do anything you put your mind to.” And to that, his co-host admitted that that he inspired her “to want to be a better, more passionate person.”
Why aren’t celebrities simply satisfied with their chosen career paths? They seem to think that having one hit song gives them license to design a line of dog leashes or mix up a perfume, and sadly that just ain’t so. Katy Perryis the latest celeb to fall victim to Hollywood’s “I can do it all!” attitude, with her recent stint hosting some Fashion Week interviews for Elle.com.
Don’t get us wrong, we love Katy when she’s prancing around onstage and canoodling sex-freak Russell Brand (Katy, he’s gonna break your heart - watch out girl!) but interviewing Karl Lagerfeld? No thanks. The iconic designer didn’t seem all that charmed by Katy’s clumsy on-camera skills - he gently corrected her when she confused a leather dress for metal and said he preferred listening to his pal Lily Allen - Katy’s arch-nemesis - when getting ready for shows. Besides regular performance challenges, Miley Cyrus has her fatigue to overcome when she sings tonight. Miley dished backstage that she is on two hours sleep and is at the point where “everything is really funny.” If anyone can pull it off, we are sure Miss Miley has what it takes!
